ALICE and Hamilton County

What began as a study to understand the challenges facing working families in one New Jersey county, the United Way’s ALICE Project now provides a framework of data and language that communities can use to improved their socio-economic conditions.

ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed.

Measuring county income and costs of living, the ALICE framework seeks to identify the “hidden population” of families who are above the federal poverty level, but whose wages are not keeping up to “the bare minimum cost to live and work in the modern economy.” (ALICE Project-NY)

How does Hamilton County measure up ?

With 1,124 households, Hamilton County has a poverty rate of 10 %, but an ALICE percentage of 46 % . The poverty/ALICE combined percentage (56 %) is the highest in New York State . Only the New York City county of Bronx is higher (66%).
