How to ban cigarettes.
While efforts to reduce smoking in the United States have resulted in significant reductions in tobacco use, other countries are implementing a more creative, “preemptive” approach.
“Denmark’s government is considering a historic law change which could see the sale of cigarettes permanently banned in the Nordic country for people born after 2010.” (thelocal.dk 3 March 2022)
In Denmark, people under 18 are not allowed to buy cigarettes currently. If the law is implemented, it would go into effect in six years, preventing youth born after 2010 from ever buying cigarettes.
New Zealand is in the process of passing a similar law. “Anyone born after 2008 will not be able to buy cigarettes or tobacco products in their lifetime, under a law expected to be enacted next year.”
“New Zealand is determined to achieve a national goal of reducing its national smoking rate to 5% by 2025, with the aim of eventually eliminating it altogether.” (bbc.com/news/world-asia 9 December 2021)
